Leaving Palmira the road stayed flat, and the wind whipped us right along. We even had a few bouts of traffic free road on the unfinished segments of divided highway. After over-gorging on some rare real whole wheat bread and several oranges I felt somewhat ill that afternoon and we stopped early in the little town of Andulucia. We arrived shortly before a parade celebrating Andalucia’s 123rd anniversary. Reminding us of San MartÃn, Argentina (see entry 28) there were plenty of horses prancing by and making a racket on the pavement.
Further reminiscent of Argentina, we found the fairly inactive firestation filled with very clean trucks and ready to take in a few viajeros (and feed them!). We were warned that they were having a party that night though. We were welcome to join, but sleeping might be hard. It was a late party though, and joining was more than we had in us. We were told in the morning that things wrapped up around 5am. We were aware all ready though. Running on not much sleep we delayed and delayed, and eventually took the day off. Breakfast was waiting for us when we got up (prepaid pastries and coffee down the street).
We’re currently staying in another midsize town, La Virginia, also somewhat reminiscent of Argentina (firestation a definite yes). We met Alberto here last night who spent eight years living in the States twenty years ago and he was happy for an opportunity to keep his english in practice. Funny to talk to a local who sounds like a New Yorker (of course, he is both).
Health and happiness to the folks back home!
Daniel
