SASA: Days 4 & 5: Waterville, PA
Posted Sept. 29, 2006, 3:21 a.m.

Today we continued along Landrus Rd to Morris, PA, where we turned south on 414.

This road is beautiful!! It hugs Pine Creek the whole way. There’s a gravel trail on an old railroad bed by the creek (totally flat), but we found prettier views and more fun in the road that rolled up and down a bit. Finally caught a good tailwind later in the day.

Turned south on 44 to Waterville, got some groceries, and then headed up Lower Pine Bottom Rd (another dirt, but this one all up hill!) to find a camp site.

Found one without much difficulty, but the slope was a bit steep so we setup a short zip line for our panniers and bikes.

Dinner: Pasta with red sauce (canned tomatoes). Can’t go wrong here!!

The following day it rained a bit, and we took the day off:

Mystified a bit by the immediate landscape: We camped in a valley/creek bed (the only flat spot around). Here and there were large, fairly deep depressesion in the ground, usually partly full of water (looked almost like bath tubs) and exposed at the edges are the root masses of neighbor trees. The depressions look suspiciously like they were washed out from a huge flood, but there is no sign of any upstream errosion! Someone blowing holes in the ground? It just collapsed? Tree toppled and washed down stream? Check out the pictures. Any ideas?

Dinner: the cake with some pork sausage.
