Mark and I woke for our last home cooked meal of gallo pinto and eggs, with café and juice from Marisa. We got a late start as we made our last preps and packing. Holy crap our bikes are heavy now!! Saying our goodbyes, we embarked on the journey.
We are headed towards Volcan Arenal to the NW of San Jose. The most difficult challenge of getting there is just getting out of the city. I unsuccessfully found a map of the greater San Jose area, so we are depending on our nonspecific maps and asking a lot of locals how to get out of town. The funny thing is that they all say the same thing when you ask. I think it’s some sort of a joke they play on two guys with loaded bikes. They point in some direction and say, “300 kilometros, inquired, y directo (300 kilometers, left, and take it directly there)”. Even when it won’t take you right there, they tell you that so you go in a circle and have to ride back by them in a few minutes…giving that awkward “hey, I’m an idiot and must not have listened to your directions”.
Mark and I rode to the outskirts of Alajuela where we stopped at a bar and asked if they would turn the tv on to watch the Obama Inaguration. We grabbed a bite and watched for an hour before we continued the up and down mountains out of San Jose. We finally stopped in Sarchi where we found a cheap room to stay and store our bikes. Not a long day, but okay for our first day. We want to walk around this really cool town this afternoon and tonight, so a good stop.
That’s pretty classic that you saw the inauguration in Spanish, but it’s great that you got to see it all. Exciting days ahead. I love your pictures — it’s soooo green everywhere! I’m impressed that you’ve been able to post them all so frequently. Keep 'em coming when you can…
Keep on truckin’ boys. You’re on one sweet adventure.
