1/22 & 23 La Fortuna
We woke up to a heavy drizzle in San Carlos and tried to decide if we wanted to wait it out before we left. We also knew it was inevitable that we would hit rain in Costa Rica and came prepared for it, but it still took some coaxing to ride into the rain. We put the rain gear on our bags (including many trash bags), and hit the road. Riding in the rain was incredible! I couldn’t pull out the camera until the rain slowed, but I think we decided riding in a light rain is quite refreshing.
We stayed at this really cool hostel called Gringo Pete’s in La Fortuna and were put in a room with a guy named Chris from Fort Collins, CO and a 60 year old Israeli man. We had some interesting conversations with both of them. We decided to stay a couple nights there so that we could take a bus to the hot springs and then to see the lava flow from Volcan Arenal the next day. The hot river was incredibly relaxing and probably good for my healing wound. However, the excruciating pain that followed, while seeing only a few tiny orange spots on a mountain 5 miles away during a two hour period made the lava trip a bust. No more touristy stuff!
We finished the night by sharing dinner with Oren, our Israeli roommate. He asked if he could use the remaining eggs and bread we had to make an Iraqi meal (he was born in Baghdad). I can’t remember what it was called, but it was awesome. He made enough extra that everyone that came into the kitchen got to try it. It was a hit.
