Cycling with Kody and Mark : Oasis
Posted Jan. 25, 2009, 10:21 p.m.

Once again we woke to rain, and being in the mountains, it was a little nippy. Mark and I were hoping to go around 40 miles today, but were really not sure where we would stay when we got there. All the cities for the next 65 miles are barely on the map, and we were doubtful we could go that far.

We headed out and got mostly downhill for the first part of the trip. We had to ride on the Interamericana highway (Panamerican) for awhile before heading toward the Nicoya Peninsula. It became apparent to us very quickly that this was the dry region of CR as the heat set in and the browns on the hills showed. I heard a grunt in the trees and assumed it wasn’t Mark. I looked in the trees and saw we saw our first monkeys!

We rode our bikes around 57 miles into the heat before we realized we were tired, and in the middle of nowhere. I figured we would probably be camping tonight, which I wasn’t opposed of, but when a hotel with a pool appeared like an oasis in the desert, Mark and I splurged. I think we are officially over budget!

And the pool even looks clean…that’s amazing! I can’t believe you guys had so much rain – it’s been as dry as a bone in Nicaragua for 2 months, probably more like the 'brown’ place you rode through. So now it’s on to the beaches – que alegria!!!
