Cycling with Kody and Mark : Playa Samara
Posted Jan. 27, 2009, 11:20 a.m.

Not thinking the ride would be too bad, we ate a granola bar and departed for our first beach day at Playa Samara. We rode through the town of Nicoya and grabbed a banana before continuing on in the extreme heat. The winding road through the mountains, coupled with the dry heat and little shade began to take its toll on both of us. We were dying, and Mark was beginning to experience heat exhaustion I think. Pouring some of the valuable water on his head was probably a good choice as it cooled him down enough to finish the 35 miles over the mountain and into Samara.

We stayed in a camping area with beachfront property. This camping area came with toilets, showers, and even bare wires strung tree to tree giving every camper an electrical plug and a light. (Apparently it is not too difficult to pass an electrical inspection here. I don’t even want to know what happens when it rains on the bare wires). With our beachfront property, we decided it was worth spending a couple days here.

We became friends with our Tico (Costa Rican) camping neighbors and got plenty of practice listening to them talk at us (they didn’t seem to mind whether we responded, they would just talk at us as if we knew what they were talking about). Apparently the grandmother was a nurse and took a look at my wounded leg, letting me know that it was infected and I needed to see a doctor. I guess I will try at the next town.
