We woke to all the monkeys yelling and growling in the trees above us and packed camp to head further south. Our maps showed that the roads along the coast were “seasonal roads” and “trails”, but if they were passable on bike, they would save us a lot of time. Like playing Oregon Trail in elementary school, Mark and I forded two rivers, one of which had a car stuck in the middle and a tractor pulling it out. The road was definitely getting worse, and it finally dumped us onto a beach.
We thought we needed to turn around and head back when we noticed a car driving on the beach. We flagged them down and asked where the road goes, and he told us that the road is the beach for about 3 kilometers (2 miles). It was a little tough to get going with the thin tires, but once we hit hard sand, Mark and I were in paradise riding on the beach (I will try to upload a video onto my flickr account if you want to see). The most relaxing and refreshing ride, with the ocean breeze to our side, took us to the small beach town of Manzanillo.
Our map told us there was merely a trail from there to Santa Teresa, but a few Americans informed us that there was a dirt road the whole way there. We wanted to get to Santa Teresa by Feb 1st because Carlos, David’s brother from San Jose that we stayed with, is coming to stay with a friend. Now we have a few days to kill before he gets here.

I am so jealous, I LOVE Dos Pinos ice cream! Roger really enjoys looking at all your pictures (as do I). He decided its a really good thing you’re not biking through Nicaragua because “Con todo y la casa de campana se lo llevan” – they’d take your tent with everything in it. Que se cuiden!
