We finally saw other groups of tour cyclists along the road. We spoke to a Canadian woman riding alone, probably in her late 40s, and received all kinds of good information from her. She has ridden all over the world on her bike, and was just beginning her ride from Panama to California. We learned a lot about touring from her, mostly how hardcore she is and how lazy we are. It was nice to finally talk to another cyclist and hear about the road ahead.
Our ride from David took us to a long stretch of fewer and fewer towns along the highway, and we were really unsure as to what our destination would be to stay each night. We had heard that in South America, it is completely normal to stay at the fire station in small towns, so we decided to try it in Las Lajas, Panama when we came across the little town. They didn’t seem too excited to put us up like we had hoped, but they let us stay under a little thatched roof in the back of the station, which kept us from having to set up our tent, and let us use the shower and bathroom. Other than the barking dog (which was a Dalmation, by the way, and we called him Sparky) all night, we had a good stay with the Bomberos.
