Once again not knowing where we were going to stay, we began our ride into a small chain of mountains. We were nearing the late afternoon and stopped for a breather in a tiny town of Los Ruices when a man invited us over to talk to us about our trip. Before we knew it, we were setting up our tent in his backyard and drinking Cokes on his front porch with the whole family. Luis was an extremely nice old man, although very tough to understand his Spanish. We often waited for his wife to clarify what he was saying so we could understand what he was talking about. We even watched the Panama news with them and caught up on our current events. Luis told us with a big grin on his face that he raises chickens to sell to people for cock fighting, and we even saw some footage of cock fighting on the news.
We soon discovered that our tent was set up right next to his dog and all of his chickens, because Mark and I had a hard time sleeping after about 2am. I was told that roosters crow at sunrise…a huge lie! They wait until they have guests, waiting until they finally fall asleep in the heat, and then they yell back and forth to each other…saying who knows what…until well after sunrise to ensure the guests get no sleep.
That being said, Luis and his wife would not let us go get breakfast in town, but they invited us into their house to have coffee, hard boiled eggs, bread and fried plantains with them. They were extremely hospitable and Mark and I were so grateful. I convinced Luis that he should go show Mark his chickens, so Luis started pulling out his chickens for Mark to hold. Mark was obviously overjoyed, as the pictures so clearly demonstrate.
Glad you boys are safe and healthy – we were worried since we hadn’t seen new posts for awhile. Roger is very impressed with Mark and the gallos – he also raises roosters but says that Panamanian rooster are really good. He also says that they use really long blades – you’ll have to verify that if you get a chance to go to a cock fight – I’ve been to more than enough here and I must say they are entertaining. Cuidense
