Finally! We have ridden for about ten days, merely with the intention of getting to this tiny little town. When we arrived, I was a little hesitant on the information we had received that the best Carnaval fiesta in all of Panama is thrown in this little, secluded town. However, when we arrived in the central park, it was evident from all of the scaffolding, beer advertisements and vendor tents that this place was preparing for a crazy party. Carnaval is celebrated in many parts of the world in the days prior to Ash Wednesday and Lent when meat (carne) is given up for 40 days, but in Panama, it is celebrated nationwide and has turned into an insane 4-day long drinking binge. Las Tablas has established itself as the most insane in Panama, so we wanted to be here to experience it. Those that know Mark and I know that we are extremely heavy drinkers and that we love to stay up all night at dance clubs, so we should fit right in here.
There are not enough hotels and places for people to stay, so many end up sleeping on the streets, either in a tent, on a cot, or passing out on the sidewalk. We were a little concerned about our bikes, so we found a lady that would be willing to let us put our bikes insid her house and let us camp in her back yard.
I will write more as it unfolds here in Las Tablas…
