2/21-25 Carnaval
I am not going to try very hard to explain the craziness that we saw for this entire week in Las Tablas. Carnaval far exceeded my expectations for craziness/pure stupidity and the amount of alcohol that can be consumed in one place in that short of time. I have tried to understand the thought process that went into planning such a party, and this is what I have come up with:
I have this great idea…in celebration of giving up worldly pleasures for 40 days, we are going to try to make up for the lost days by packing it all into the previous 4 days. Lets invite a couple hundred thousand people to come into this tiny town and drink as much as they possibly can, then walk around the central park area. We’ll get them to start drinking as soon as they wake up and we’ll just spray tons of water on them to keep them cool during the day so they can keep drinking. At night, once everyone is hammered in the streets, we are going to light off a bunch of fireworks from the street right in the middle of the people. After that, lets have a parade through the packed streets with incredibly elegant floats, and just force our way through the crowds with tractors. And after everyone has been wasted for over 12 hours, lets bring them into our huge clubs we constructed so they can dance until 5am. Then….here is the kicker…lets do this for 4-5 days straight!!
That is as much justice as I can do to explain Carnaval. It is absolutely crazy and incredible. At times I was amazed at the lack of rules at such an event, but it definitely made for a hilarious and fantastic time in Las Tablas.
