Colon & Portobelo

A little stir crazy in Panama City, Mark and I took a bus to the Caribbean side of Panama to see Colon and the historic trade route city of Portobelo. The trip into the dirty city of Colon was forgettable except for the Gatun Locks on the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal. Portobelo, on the other hand, is an interesting clash of 400 year old ruins and the run down and impoverished modern city built inside the ruins. There is little attention taken at preserving the rich history here as they have constructed homes inside the rock remains of one of the most important port towns of the early Spanish conquest in the Americas. This city was used to store all the gold found and stolen from the natives before it was taken back to Spain. Thus, this city was sacked and burned down many times as pirates attempted to take all the riches of the city. The church in Portobelo is one of the oldest churches still standing in the Americas.
